Standard EN SampleStandard Specification for Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains, and Sewers with Less Than 2 ft of Cover Subjected to Highway Loadings
Also Known As:
The AASHTO M 273-20 standard specifies the requirements for single-cell, precast reinforced concrete box sections that are designed to withstand highway loadings and have less than 2 ft of cover. These box sections are intended for use in the construction of culverts, as well as for the conveyance of storm water, industrial wastes, and sewage.
The standard provides guidelines for the manufacturing and purchasing of these precast box sections. It includes standard designs, with the criteria used to develop these designs given in Appendix X1. The successful performance of the product depends on factors such as the proper selection of the box section, bedding, backfill, controlled manufacture in the plant, and adherence to construction specifications during installation.
It is important for the owner of the precast reinforced concrete box sections to ensure that the specified box sections are suitable for the loading conditions and field requirements. Inspection at the construction site must also be provided to ensure proper installation.
For box sections with 2 ft or more earth cover or subjected to dead load only, AASHTO M 259 should be used instead of AASHTO M 273-20.
If load-and-resistance factor design (LRFD) is required, ASTM C 1577 should be used.
