Standard ENStandard Practice for Determination of International Roughness Index (IRI) to Quantify Roughness of Pavements
Also Known As:
The AASHTO PP 37-04 standard outlines a methodology for assessing the roughness of a pavement section. This standard recommends using a road profiler to measure a single longitudinal profile in both the inside and outside wheelpaths of the pavement.
Based on these measurements, an International Roughness Index (IRI) statistic is calculated for each wheelpath. The IRI is a widely accepted metric for quantifying pavement roughness and is commonly used for evaluating the ride quality of road surfaces.
To determine the roughness of the pavement section, the average of the two IRI statistics is reported. This standard provides a consistent and objective approach for assessing and comparing the roughness of pavements, allowing for effective pavement management and maintenance decisions. It ensures that measurements are taken in a standardized manner, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
