Standard EN SampleStandard Specification for Recovery of Asphalt Binder from Solution by Abson Method
Also Known As:
The AASHTO R 59-11 (2019) standard outlines the procedure for recovering asphalt binder from a previous extraction process using trichloroethylene or methylene chloride. The recovered asphalt binder should have properties comparable to those in the original asphalt mixture and in sufficient quantity for further testing.
The use of trichloroethylene or methylene chloride is permitted, although it is recommended to conduct a "blank" recovery test on asphalt binder with known properties whenever a new supply of solvent is used. This helps ensure that non-reagent-grade solvents or certain epoxy resins do not affect the properties of the recovered binder. In case of any dispute, it is advised to use reagent-grade solvents.
It is important to note that while the AASHTO R 59-11 standard is similar to ASTM D 1856-09, they are not technically identical.
