Standard ENStandard of Method of Test for Apparent Viscosity of Hot-Poured Asphalt Crack Sealant Using Rotational Viscometer
Also Known As:
The AASHTO T 366-18 standard provides a detailed procedure for measuring the apparent viscosity of hot-poured asphalt crack sealant. This measurement is carried out using a rotational viscometer that meets the requirements specified by MP 25 and PP 85.
The standard is applicable to hot-poured asphalt crack sealants that are used to fill cracks in asphalt pavement. The test is conducted at elevated temperatures ranging from 150 to 200°C to simulate the conditions experienced by the sealant during installation. The rotational viscometer used in this method is a rotating spindle-type viscometer, and the spindle size and rotational speed are selected to resemble field pouring conditions (60 rpm).
The purpose of this test is to ensure that the hot-poured asphalt crack sealant has an appropriate apparent viscosity. The sealant should be low-viscosity enough to effectively fill cracks but high-viscosity enough to prevent flow out of the crack. Viscosity data obtained through this method allow for quality control and specification compliance of the sealant, ensuring that it performs as intended in real-world conditions. This standard is particularly useful for field laboratories or plant sites conducting quality control checks on the sealant.
