Standard EN SampleStandard Practice for Accelerated Aging of Asphalt Binder Using a Pressurized Aging Vessel (PAV)
Also Known As:
The AASHTO R 28-12 (2016) standard practice is used to accelerate the aging process of asphalt binders using a pressurized aging vessel (PAV). This standard is specifically designed to simulate the oxidative aging that occurs in asphalt binders during service. It involves subjecting the binders to elevated temperatures and pressurized air, which mimics the oxidative aging that would normally occur over a longer period of time in the field.
The accelerated aging process is intended to evaluate the relative resistance of different asphalt binders to oxidative aging at specified temperatures. It should be noted that this practice does not take into account variables related to the mixture, such as the volumetric proportions of the mix, permeability of the mix, properties of the aggregates, or any other factors that may affect binder aging during actual service. Therefore, the results obtained from this standard can provide a comparative evaluation of asphalt binders but may not fully replicate the aging behavior observed in real-world conditions.
