The standard method AASHTO TP 82-10 (2017) describes the procedure for determining the bulk specific gravity (Gmb) of compacted bituminous mixtures using water displacement measured by a pressure sensor. This method is applicable for samples that have open or interconnecting voids or absorb more than 2.0 percent water by volume, or both.
It is important to note that this method does not directly determine the water absorption by volume. To determine water absorption, another test, T 166, should be used. The bulk specific gravity of the compacted bituminous mixtures can be used to calculate the unit mass of the mixture.
