Standard EN SampleStandard Method of Test for Determining the Asphalt Binder Content of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) by the Ignition Method
Also Known As:
The AASHTO T 308-18 standard is a method used for determining the asphalt binder content of hot mix asphalt (HMA) through the ignition method. This test involves subjecting a sample of HMA to high temperatures in a furnace until the asphalt binder reaches its flashpoint and is completely burned off. The test can be conducted using either the convection method or the direct infrared (IR) irradiation method for specimen heating.
During the test, the asphalt binder content is calculated by measuring the weight loss of the sample before and after ignition. By subtracting the weight of the aggregate remaining after burning from the initial weight of the sample, the weight of the asphalt binder can be determined. The remaining aggregate can also be used for further analysis, such as sieve analysis using the AASHTO T 30 method.
