Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Bulk Specific Gravity (Gmb) of Compacted Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Using Saturated Surface-Dry Specimens
Also Known As:
AASHTO T 166-16 (2020) is a standard method of test that is used to determine the bulk specific gravity (Gmb) of compacted hot mix asphalt (HMA) using saturated surface-dry specimens. The purpose of this method is to obtain accurate measurements of the bulk specific gravity, which is an important parameter in calculating the unit mass of the asphalt mixture.
It is important to note that this method should only be used for samples that do not contain open or interconnecting voids and do not absorb more than 2.0 percent of water by volume, as determined in Sections 7.2 or 10.2 of the standard. If the sample does contain open or interconnecting voids or absorbs more than 2.0 percent of water by volume, then other methods such as T 275 or T 331 should be used.
