AASHTO TP 127-17 is a standard method used to determine the fracture energy density of asphalt binder through the Binder Fracture Energy (BFE) test. The test involves subjecting the asphalt binder to direct tension, evaluating its cracking performance. To evaluate the relative cracking performance accurately, it is suggested that asphalt binder be aged using T 240 (RTFO) plus R 28 (PAV). However, this test method can be applied to determine the fracture energy of any type of binder, including neat or modified binders, as well as asphalt binders extracted from pavements. The test apparatus is designed to conduct tests within an intermediate temperature range of 0°C to 25°C.
