Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Protective Sealers for Portland Cement Concrete
Also Known As:
The AASHTO TP 96-13 (2018) standard focuses on the testing and selection criteria for sealers used in protecting new concrete or extending the lifespan of existing concrete in highway structures. The standard provides guidelines for the evaluation of sealers, including routine and job site product quality assurance, field performance, and reapplication. The testing and evaluation of sealers are outlined in PP 73, which is the Standard Practice for Quality Assurance, Job Site Quality Control, and Reapplication of Protective Sealers for Portland Cement Concrete.
The standard recognizes two basic types of sealers: coatings and penetrants. Coatings are sealers that remain on the surface of the concrete, while penetrants are sealers that penetrate into the concrete to a measurable depth without significantly altering the appearance of the concrete.
