Standard EN SampleStandard Practice for Determining the Reactivity of Concrete Aggregates and Selecting Appropriate Measures for Preventing Deleterious Expansion in New Concrete Construction
Also Known As:
The AASHTO R 80-17 standard provides guidelines for identifying potentially reactive aggregates in concrete and selecting appropriate preventive measures to minimize the risk of expansion. This standard covers both alkali-silica reactive and alkali-carbonate reactive aggregates.
For alkali-silica reactive aggregates, the practice suggests several preventive measures. These include avoiding the use of reactive aggregates altogether, limiting the alkali content in the concrete mixture, using blended cement, incorporating supplementary cementitious materials, or using lithium nitrate as an admixture. The standard also allows for a combination of these measures to be used.
On the other hand, for alkali-carbonate reactive aggregates, the standard recommends a more straightforward approach. The preventive measure in this case is to simply avoid using the reactive aggregate in the concrete mixture.
