Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Determination of the Voids of Dry Compacted Filler
Also Known As:
The AASHTO TP 117-15 (2019) standard outlines the procedure for measuring the voids of dry compacted filler using the Rigden Apparatus. The purpose of this test is to determine the percentage volume of free asphalt that a filler can carry.
The test is applicable to both natural and manufactured fillers. The Rigden Apparatus is used to compact a measured volume of the filler material into cylindrical molds. Once compacted, the molds are disassembled, and the compacted filler specimens are carefully weighed. The weight of the compacted specimens is recorded and used in conjunction with the original volume of the specimens to calculate the voids.
By determining the voids of the dry compacted filler, this test provides valuable information on the ability of the filler material to accommodate and carry asphalt. This information is crucial in evaluating the suitability of fillers for asphalt mixtures, as well as in designing and optimizing asphalt formulations.
