Formwork for Concrete
Also Known As:
The ACI SP-4(14) standard is a comprehensive document that provides guidelines and recommendations for designing and constructing formwork for concrete structures. The 8th edition of this standard, authored by David W. Johnston, has been updated to align with the "Guide to Formwork for Concrete (ACI 347R-14)." The revision includes referencing current standards and practices, removing outdated material, adding content on new developments in formwork technology, and updating the document's layout.
This edition incorporates the updated lateral pressure provisions from ACI 347R-14, and also provides expanded coverage on wind loads on formwork, which is based on ASCE/SEI 7-10 as modified by ASCE/SEI 37-14. The design of formwork is divided into two chapters, one focusing on bending, shear, and deflection of wall, slab, and column formwork members, and another focusing on shoring and bracing members. Additionally, a separate chapter is dedicated to bridge formwork considerations. A new chapter summarizing the recommendations of ACI 347.3R-13, which guides the formation of concrete surfaces, has been added as well.
The benefits of the 8th edition of ACI SP-4(14) include being an ACI best-selling document, providing examples using both allowable strength design and load and resistance factor design, being updated to current standards, offering chapter problems for classroom study, and providing a visual representation with 500 modern color photographs and 150 color illustrations. It is a valuable resource for engineers, contractors, and other professionals involved in the design and construction of formwork for concrete structures.
