Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures
Also Known As:
The Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures is a comprehensive document that consists of two standards: Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-13) and Specification for Masonry Structures (ACI 530.1-13). These standards are a collaborative effort between The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEI/ASCE) through the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC).
The Code focuses on the design and construction of masonry structures, covering various aspects such as definitions, contract documents, quality assurance, materials, analysis and design procedures, load requirements, reinforcement details, seismic design, and more. It includes both empirical and prescriptive methods for design and caters to specific location and construction criteria.
On the other hand, the Specification provides minimum construction requirements for masonry in structures. It addresses quality assurance for materials, placement, bonding, and anchoring of masonry, as well as the placement of grout and reinforcement. The Specification can be modified and referenced in the Project Manual and is considered a master specification mandated by the Code.
The document also contains commentaries that offer additional background information, committee considerations, and research data utilized in the development of the Code and Specification. These commentaries are not obligatory but serve as supplementary material for users.
