AS 4100 Supp 1:1999 is a standard that outlines the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, erection, and modification of steel structures. It focuses on ensuring that these structures are safe, serviceable, and durable. The standard excludes steel elements that are less than 3 mm thick, as they are usually cold-formed and fall under the scope of AS/NZS 4600. The exceptions to this exclusion are hollow section members to AS 1163, which can still be designed using the provisions of AS 4100.

The standard limits the yield stress used in design to 450 MPa due to a lack of research data on steel grades above this value. Australian steel standards generally do not contain steel grades with a specified yield stress above 450 MPa. If steels with a higher yield stress are used, additional provisions may be required. The use of a steel with a specified yield stress greater than 450 MPa is excluded from plastic design by Clause 4.5.2.

AS 4100 Supp 1:1999 is not intended for use with thin-walled shell or plate structures, as these structures have failure modes not addressed in the standard. However, it is considered reasonable to design floor plates using the provisions of the standard. Composite steel-concrete members should be designed using the provisions of AS 2327, Composite structures.
