Standard EN SampleMasonry in Buildings (known as the SAA Masonry Code) - Extracts from AS 3700 - Masonry Housing Requirements
Also Known As:
AS 3700 Supp 5:1992, also known as the SAA Masonry Code, provides guidelines and requirements for the design and construction of masonry in buildings. It covers both unreinforced and reinforced masonry using various types of manufactured units, such as clay, calcium silicate or concrete, as well as square-dressed natural stone laid in mortar.
The standard assumes that the structural design of masonry is done by experienced structural engineers or similarly qualified individuals, who will refer to Sections 4, 5, and 6 for guidance. It also emphasizes the importance of executing the construction work under the supervision of qualified individuals with expertise in high-quality masonry construction and a deep understanding of the structural requirements.
However, it should be noted that AS 3700 Supp 5:1992 does not provide specific requirements for prestressed masonry, prefabricated masonry panels, or masonry used in composite action with steel or concrete structural members. Instead, it advises following the principles outlined in the standard, to the extent that they are applicable, for such types of construction.
For masonry designed for earthquake conditions, AS 2121 (SAA Earthquake Code) should be referenced alongside AS 3700 Supp 5:1992. Additionally, the New Zealand Provisional Standard 4230 P, Code of practice for the design of masonry structures, offers additional guidance for masonry detailing in earthquake-prone areas.
