AS/NZS 3678:2016 is a standard that outlines the requirements for the production and supply of hot-rolled structural steel plates, floorplates, and slabs. It covers a range of steels including mechanically-tested steels, analysis-only steels, and mechanically-tested weathering steels. The standard is intended for use in general structural and engineering applications.

The standard specifies that all grades specified are suitable for welding in accordance with AS/NZS 1554 and for fastening as specified in various other standards such as AS 3990 and NZS 3404.1. However, it does not cover steel plates for pressure equipment, hot-rolled steel flat products, and quenched and tempered plate for structural and pressure vessel steel.

The standard also provides guidelines for purchasers on the requirements that should be specified and those that can be agreed upon during the enquiry and ordering process. Additionally, guidelines on the cold-bending and hot-forming of plates during fabrication are provided.
