Standard EN SampleBridge Design - Bridge Assessment
Also Known As:
AS 5100.7:2017 outlines the requirements for evaluating the geometric aspects, condition, fatigue life, capacity, and loading of existing bridges, culverts, and associated structures. The standard is applicable to road, rail, pedestrian, and cyclist path bridges. It provides guidelines for determining the load rating factor of a bridge based on a designated rating vehicle.
The assessment and load rating process outlined in this standard may involve modifications to the original design load and structural capacity requirements. This is because the bridges were not initially designed according to the specifications presented in the AS 5100 series. Additionally, the nominated rating vehicles used for the load rating might differ from the original design load due to changes in the bridge's usage.
The standard takes into account both Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Serviceability Limit State (SLS) considerations. It is worth noting that a simplified assessment and load rating using overstress factors can also be performed, for which the NAASRA Highway Bridge Design Specification should be referred to.
