Standard EN SampleCalculation of the Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Fine-Grained Soils
Also Known As:
The ASCE 65-17 standard is part of a series of standards aimed at enhancing the characterization and understanding of groundwater parameters. Specifically, this standard provides guidelines for calculating the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), permeability, and porosity of fine-grained soils.
The calculation process outlined in the standard consists of four components. First, strain-stress data from a step-load test are utilized. Then, one-dimensional vertical consolidation theory is applied to establish the relationship between Ksat and the coefficient of consolidation. Next, the standard explains the correlation between Ksat and permeability. Lastly, it presents the relationship between porosity and the void ratio of the soil.
The methodology presented in this standard can be applied to refine or improve calculations related to land subsidence, groundwater flow prediction, and the transport of dissolved solutes in groundwater. It's important to note that the standard is specifically limited to fine-grained, compressible, inorganic soils, and does not cover highly organic soils (peat) due to their anomalous consolidation behavior.
