Seismic Analysis of Safety-Related Nuclear Structures
Also Known As:
The ASCE 4-16 standard provides guidelines for designing nuclear structures to withstand seismic events. It complements the ASCE 43 standard and focuses on both new and existing facilities. The standard aims to develop a risk-informed approach by specifying the calculated responses that have a specified likelihood of being exceeded during the design basis earthquake shaking.
The standard covers various topics, including the modeling of structures, analysis methods, soil-structural interaction modeling, input for subsystem analysis, and specific applications like buried pipes and conduits, dynamic soil pressures on walls, and seismically isolated structures. It also includes two nonmandatory appendixes and extensive commentary on the provisions.
ASCE 4-16 has undergone thorough revision and expansion compared to the previous version, ASCE 4-98. When used in conjunction with the companion standard ASCE 43, it provides crucial information for structural design engineers, safety engineers, nuclear facility managers and operating personnel, and government regulators involved in nuclear facilities.
