Standard ENStandard Test Methods for Freezing and Thawing Compacted Soil-Cement Mixtures
Also Known As:
The ASTM D560/D560M-16 standard provides procedures for determining the resistance of compacted soil-cement specimens to repeated freezing and thawing. These test methods are used in conjunction with Test Methods D559/D559M and criteria from the Soil-Cement Laboratory Handbook to determine the minimum amount of cement required in soil-cement to achieve adequate hardness against field weathering.
The standard includes two test methods, depending on soil gradation, for preparation and molding of specimens. Test Method A is used when 100% of the soil sample passes the 4.75-mm [No. 4] sieve, while Test Method B is used when part of the soil sample is retained on the 4.75-mm [No. 4] sieve but has 30% or less retained on the 19.0-mm [0.75-in.] sieve.
The standard also provides guidelines for significant digits and rounding of observed and calculated values, following the practices established in Practice D6026, unless superseded by the test method. The standard also clarifies the use of inch-pound units, particularly in the gravitational system, and cautions against the practice of combining separate inch-pound unit systems within a single standard.
It is important to note that the quality of the results produced by this standard depends on the competence of the personnel and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. While compliance with Practice D3740 is recommended, it does not guarantee reliable results, as reliable results depend on various factors.
