Standard ENStandard Test Methods for Compressive Strength of Molded Soil-Cement Cylinders
Also Known As:
The ASTM D1633-17 standard is titled "Standard Test Methods for Compressive Strength of Molded Soil-Cement Cylinders." It provides two alternative procedures, Method A and Method B, for determining the compressive strength of soil-cement using molded cylinders as test specimens.
Method A involves using a test specimen prepared in a mold with a diameter of 4.0 inches and a height of 4.6 inches, resulting in a height over diameter ratio of 1.15. This method is suitable for materials with 30% or less retained on the 19.0-mm sieve.
Method B involves using a test specimen with a height over diameter ratio of 2.0, prepared in a cylindrical mold with a diameter of 2.8 inches and a height of 9.0 inches. This method is applicable to materials that pass the 4.75-mm sieve.
It is noted that Method A gives a relative measure of strength rather than a rigorous determination of compressive strength, while Method B provides a better measure of compressive strength from a technical viewpoint.
The standard also provides information about the units of measurement to be used (inch-pound or SI units), and guidelines for significant digits and rounding of values. It emphasizes that the quality of results depends on the competence of personnel and the suitability of equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740 is recommended but does not ensure reliable results, as they depend on various factors.
