Standard ENTest Method for Performance Testing of Wind Energy Conversion Systems
Also Known As:
The ASTM E1240-88 (R1996) standard provides a test method for determining and reporting the performance characteristics of Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). The purpose of this standard is to ensure an equitable basis for comparing the energy production performance and operating characteristics of WECS available in the marketplace.
This test method is not limited to WECS that produce electricity, and it is intended to be applicable to WECS of all sizes, although it was specifically compiled for small WECS. It should be noted that this standard does not address issues of reliability, durability, or economics.
In terms of wind speed ratings, the test method assumes that the wind is experienced at the centerline height of the WECS rotor. There are no standard heights specified for either the WECS rotor or the anemometer used in the testing process.
