Standard ENStandard Test Method for Tackiness of Asphalt Binders and Emulsified Asphalt Residue Using the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)
Also Known As:
ASTM D8189-19 is a standard test method that is used to determine the tackiness of asphalt binders and emulsified asphalt residue using the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). The test is designed to quantify the stickiness of the material at different temperatures that are expected during field applications of tack coat materials. By determining the temperature at which the residue becomes tacky, formulators can gain an indication of the performance of the material.
It is important to note that the quality of the results obtained from this standard is dependent on the competency of the personnel conducting the test and the calibration and maintenance of the equipment used. Compliance with the criteria specified in Specification D3666 is essential to ensure reliable results, but it does not guarantee complete reliability. The reliability of the results depends on various factors, and following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or a similar acceptable guideline helps in evaluating and controlling some of these factors.
This standard can be used for both unconditioned material and material conditioned in accordance with Test Method D2872. However, it is important to note that the majority of the development work for this test method was performed on unconditioned material. The emulsified asphalt residue should never be conditioned.
It is stated in the standard that a precision and bias statement hasn't been developed for this test method yet, so it should not be used for acceptance or rejection of materials for purchasing purposes. Additionally, the notes and footnotes in the standard should be considered as explanatory material and not as requirements of the standard.
