Standard EN SampleStandard Practice for Pavement Condition Index Surveys for Interlocking Concrete Roads and Parking Lots
Also Known As:
ASTM E2840-11 (R2019) is a standard practice used to assess the condition of roads and parking lots surfaced with interlocking concrete pavement. It utilizes the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method to quantify the pavement condition through visual surveys. The PCI is a numerical indicator that rates the surface condition of the pavement, providing a measure of its present condition based on observed distress. However, it does not measure structural capacity, skid resistance, or roughness directly.
The PCI serves as an objective and rational basis for determining maintenance and repair needs, as well as prioritizing them. It allows for regular monitoring of the pavement's condition, enabling early identification of major rehabilitation needs. Additionally, it can provide feedback on pavement performance for the improvement and validation of current pavement design and maintenance procedures.
It is worth noting that while the PCI procedure for interlocking concrete pavements has been developed and adopted, further verification of its accuracy and repeatability is still required. The practice itself is an adaptation of the PCI method for interlocking concrete pavements, which was initially developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and later adopted by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the American Public Works Association (APWA).
