ASTM C821-14 is a standard specification that covers the requirements for various types of commercial hydrated lime used in conjunction with pozzolans. The specification includes high-calcium, magnesium, or dolomitic-hydrated lime as well as by-product limes and slaked quick limes in dry, wet, or slurried form.
The standard requires that the lime meets specific physical and chemical limits, including factors such as chemical composition, blaine fineness, and pozzolanic receptivity index. The chemical factors are determined through tests that measure calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and carbon dioxide content. The blaine fineness and pozzolanic receptivity index are also measured to ensure the lime meets the specified requirements.
In addition to the chemical and physical requirements, ASTM C821-14 also includes test methods for assessing the strength of lime-pozzolan combinations and their resistance to freeze-thaw cycles. These tests evaluate the performance of the lime-pozzolan system when used in conjunction with aggregates.
