Standard ENStandard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates
Also Known As:
The ASTM C136/C136M-19 standard is used to determine the grading of materials proposed for use as aggregates or already being used as aggregates. This test method provides data on particle size distribution, which is important for determining compliance with specification requirements and controlling the production of aggregate products and mixtures.
The standard specifies that accurate determination of material finer than the 75-µm (No. 200) sieve cannot be achieved by this test method alone. Therefore, Test Method C117 should be used for determining the material finer than the No. 200 sieve by washing.
The standard also refers to other methods of sampling and testing in Specification C637 for heavyweight aggregates.
This test method covers the determination of particle size distribution for both fine and coarse aggregates by sieving. It includes instructions for conducting sieve analysis for aggregates that have grading requirements for both coarse and fine fractions.
Note 1 in the standard clarifies that sieve size is identified by its standard designation in Specification E11. The alternative designation in parentheses is for informational purposes only and does not represent a different standard sieve size. The standard also highlights that SI units are considered standard for the dimensions of sieve cloth openings and wire diameters, while inch-pound units are considered standard for sieve frames, pans, and covers.
