Standard Test Method for Evaluating Asphalt-Covered Concrete Bridge Decks Using Ground Penetrating Radar

SKU117541884 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2008 Pages CountPages6

The ASTM D6087-08 (R2015)e1 standard provides a non-destructive approach to assess the condition of concrete bridge decks overlaid with asphaltic concrete. The test method can also be applied to bridge decks with portland cement concrete overlays and those without overlays.

This standard aims to address the need for a systematic approach to bridge deck rehabilitation by offering a more efficient and accurate method of data collection compared to traditional methods such as visual inspection, physical testing, and coring. By utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), the standard enables rapid surveys of bridges without the need for removal of the overlay or other destructive procedures.

The information obtained through this test method is crucial for estimating the condition of asphalt-covered concrete bridge decks, which is essential for maintenance and rehabilitation purposes. The use of GPR is particularly important as it is currently the only non-destructive method available to evaluate bridge deck condition on decks with an asphalt overlay.

The standard also outlines the manifestations of concrete bridge deck deterioration, which can be caused by corrosion of embedded reinforcement or decomposition of concrete, among other factors. It highlights the importance of identifying areas of active reinforcement corrosion, chloride-contaminated concrete, and other forms of deterioration. However, it should be noted that this test method may not be suitable for evaluating bridges with localized delaminations over the diameter of the reinforcement, or those with cathodic protection or conductive aggregates in the asphalt. Finally, it is important to note that this standard does not currently have a precision and bias statement, and therefore should not be used for acceptance or rejection purposes in material purchasing.
