Standard ENStandard Specification for Performance-Graded Asphalt Binder Using the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) Test
Also Known As:
ASTM D8239-21a is a standard specification that defines the performance grading of asphalt binders using the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) Test. This specification provides grading designations for asphalt binders based on factors such as pavement design temperatures and traffic loading.
The specification incorporates Test Method D7405 for determining non-recoverable creep compliance, which is measured as Jnr. Designations such as S, H, V, or E must be specified for standard, heavy, very heavy, and extremely heavy traffic loading, respectively.
The standard includes explanatory notes and footnotes that provide additional information. However, these notes and footnotes, except those in tables and figures, are not considered as requirements of the standard.
Note 2 mentions that a guidance document for specifying bodies using R??% for elastic properties is under development. Note 3 highlights the availability of other specifications for asphalt binders graded by penetration or viscosity, as well as performance-graded asphalt binders. Note 4 points to AASHTO R 29, which provides non-mandatory information for determining the performance grade of an asphalt binder.
