Standard ENStandard Specification for Joints for Concrete Pipe, Manholes, and Precast Box Sections Using Preformed Flexible Joint Sealants (Metric)
Also Known As:
The ASTM C990M-09 (R2019) standard provides guidelines for the joints used in precast concrete pipe, manholes, and box sections. These joints utilize preformed flexible joint sealants and are primarily used in storm sewers and culverts that do not operate under internal pressure or have infiltration or exfiltration limits.
The specification outlines the acceptable materials and physical tests for the joint sealants. Bitumen sealants are made from asphalts, hydrocarbon resins, plasticizing compounds, and inert mineral fillers with no solvents. Butyl rubber sealants are made from blends of butyl rubber, refined hydrocarbon resins, plasticizing compounds, and inert mineral fillers, also without solvents.
The joint design consists of a bell or groove on one end of the section and a spigot or tongue on the adjacent end of the joining section. The standard provides detailed test methods for determining the composition and physical properties of both bitumen and butyl sealants. The sections are tested hydrostatically in vertical alignment, and a sufficient number of sections are assembled in a straight alignment for testing.
It is important to note that this specification only covers the material and performance of the joint and sealant. Infiltration and exfiltration quantities for installed sections are dependent on factors other than the joints and must be addressed by other specifications and suitable testing of the installed pipeline.
