Standard ENStandard Test Method for Examination and Analysis of Hardened Masonry Mortar
Also Known As:
ASTM C1324-20a is a standard test method that provides procedures for the examination and analysis of hardened masonry mortar. The test method involves petrographic examination and chemical analysis of mortar samples in order to determine the proportions of different components present in the mortar.
The test method consists of various procedures and sub-procedures that require a substantial degree of petrographic and chemical skills, as well as the use of elaborate instrumentation. Petrographic examination is used to examine the mortar samples under a microscope, while chemical analysis is used to determine the composition of the mortar.
The results of the chemical analysis, when considered alongside the petrographic examination, allow for the calculation of component proportions in the mortar. This enables the determination of the mortar composition, which is represented by Types M, N, S, and O as specified in Table 1 of Specification C270.
It is important to note that failure of a mortar to have the composition defined in Table 1 of Specification C270 does not necessarily mean that the mortar does not meet the requirements of Specification C270. The mortar may still meet the alternative requirements specified in Table 2 of Specification C270.
The standard also highlights that the maleic acid method of analysis is not applicable for the analysis of mortar, as it is greatly influenced by carbonation and does not provide for the determination of calcium.
