ASTM D4633-16 is a standard test method that describes procedures for measuring the energy that enters the penetrometer drill rod string during dynamic penetrometer testing of soil due to the hammer impact. This test method has particular application in comparing N-values obtained from the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) of soils, as well as other dynamic penetrometer tests. The energy measurement procedure outlined in this standard allows for evaluating variations in N-values resulting from differences in the hammer system, such as mass, geometry, stroke, anvil, and operating efficiency.
The standard emphasizes the approximate linear relationship between incremental penetration and the energy delivered to the drill rods, which leads to an approximate inverse relationship between N-value and the energy. However, it also notes that tests for energy evaluation of the hammer systems should be limited to moderate N-value ranges between 10 and 50.
The energy measurement procedure outlined in this standard can be used to evaluate both operator-dependent cathead and rope hammer systems, as well as relatively operator-independent automatic systems. It has direct applications in liquefaction evaluation for sands, as referenced in Practice D6066. Additionally, this test method is useful for comparing N-values produced by different equipment or operators, aiding the design of penetrometer systems, training of dynamic penetrometer system operators, and developing conversion factors between different types of dynamic penetration tests.
It is important to note that the quality of the results obtained through this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the test, as well as the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740, which provides criteria for competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, etc., is recommended. However, compliance with Practice D3740 does not guarantee reliable results, as they depend on many factors beyond the standard itself.
