ASTM C841-03 (R2018) is a standard specification that outlines the minimum requirements for the installation of interior lathing and furring to receive gypsum plaster. The specification also provides methods of application for these materials. The standard allows the use of other materials as long as they possess similar physical characteristics and durability under usage conditions.
The materials covered in this specification include tie wire, hanger wire, gypsum lath, expanded metal lath, welded wire lath, woven wire lath, nails, screws, staples, paper, and various accessories such as control joints, cornerite, channels, rod and flat hangers, clips, and striplath. It emphasizes the importance of keeping materials dry and stored properly, preferably indoors. If materials need to be stored outside, they should be stacked off the ground, supported on a level platform, and protected from weather and surface contamination.
The scope of the standard covers various installation requirements such as applying gypsum lath to supports, both wood and metal, installation of studless solid partitions using gypsum lath and plaster or metal lath and plaster, suspended and furred ceilings with metal lath and gypsum lath construction, and installation of main runners, cross furring, and metal furring for walls.
To achieve the required fire resistance, details of construction for specific assemblies should be obtained from reports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, or listings from recognized fire testing laboratories. Similarly, if a specific degree of sound control is required, details should be obtained from reports of sound tests that have met the requirements of Test Method E492.
