Standard ENStandard Specification for Penetration-Graded Asphalt Binder for Use in Pavement Construction
Also Known As:
The ASTM D946/D946M-20 standard is a specification for penetration-graded asphalt binder used in pavement construction. This standard sets forth the requirements for asphalt cement, which is made by refining crude petroleum through appropriate methods.
The specification defines penetration grades, which include 40-50, 60-70, 85-100, 120-150, and 200-300. These grades determine the hardness or consistency of the asphalt binder. The asphalt cement must be homogeneous and should not produce foam when heated to the application temperature.
ASTM test methods are used to determine various characteristics of the asphalt binder, including ductility, flash point, solubility in trichloroethylene, and penetration. These tests ensure that the asphalt binder meets specific performance requirements.
Note: It is worth mentioning that for asphalt binders graded by viscosity at 60 °C, the specification D3381/D3381M should be referred to, and for performance-graded asphalt binder, the specification D6373 should be consulted.
