The ASTM D2643/D2643M-21 standard specifies the requirements for prefabricated bituminous geomembranes used as canal and ditch liners of the exposed type. The purpose of these liners is to provide a continuous lining for reservoirs, ponds, canals, and ditches.

The liner sheets are composed of layers of asphalt mastic sandwiched between asphalt-saturated felts, mats, or fabrics. They are coated on both sides and covered with a material to prevent them from sticking together during storage and shipment. The coating is a hot-applied asphalt material that may be compounded with a mineral stabilizer.

To ensure the quality and performance of the liner sheets, various tests are conducted. These tests include determining the thickness of the asphalt coating, testing the water absorption, measuring the mass percent of asphalt, evaluating resistance to decay, assessing flexibility and brittleness, and testing the heat dissipation properties.
