The ASTM D7113/D7113M-10 (R2016) standard describes a test method for determining the in-place density and relative compaction of compacted bituminous mixtures used in pavement construction.

The test method is nondestructive and provides a rapid technique for determining the density of the pavement. It can be used to establish the proper rolling effort and pattern needed to achieve the required density. The non-destructive nature of the test allows for repetitive measurements to be made at single or multiple locations on the pavement to monitor changes in density.

The density results obtained from this test method are relative, so calibration of the device is required to convert the results to actual density. Section 6 of the test method provides a method for calibration. The standard also mentions that personnel and equipment used for the test can be evaluated in accordance with Specification D3666.

The equipment used in this test is an electromagnetic surface contact device, designed to accommodate variations in surface moisture and temperature typically encountered in paving applications. The device should either have design parameters that reduce sensitivity to moisture and temperature, or measurements and algorithms to account for these variations in the rolling pattern.
