Standard Specification for Epoxy-Resin-Base Bonding Systems for Concrete

SKU139586278 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2020 Pages CountPages6

The ASTM C881/C881M-20a standard is a specification that outlines the requirements for two-component epoxy-resin bonding systems for use on concrete surfaces. These bonding systems must have the ability to cure in humid conditions and adhere to damp surfaces. The standard classifies the bonding systems based on their type, grade, class, and color.

The types of epoxy-resin bonding systems covered by this standard include Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, Type V, Type VI, and Type VII, each with specific physical requirements. The systems are also classified into Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 based on their flow characteristics and viscosity. Additionally, they are designated as Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, or Class F based on the range of temperatures they can withstand.

Epoxy-resin bonding systems are typically unpigmented but can be colored or darkened. They are supplied in two components that are mixed prior to use according to written instructions. Component A contains the epoxy resin, which may or may not have a reactive diluent, while Component B contains one or more curing agents.

This standard specifies various test methods to determine properties such as consistency, gel time, filler content, epoxy equivalent, viscosity, absorption, bond strength, thermal compatibility, heat deflection temperature, linear coefficient of shrinkage, compressive yield strength and modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break, and contact strength.

It should be noted that this standard does not cover epoxy-resin-base bonding systems that have been modified by adding components like cement, fine aggregate, or fiber reinforcement. Additionally, it does not address the effects of creep on these bonding systems under load or the potential for creep rupture, which may require additional testing. Notes and footnotes included in the standard are for explanatory purposes and are not considered as requirements.
