Standard ENStandard Specification for Asphalt-Coated Glass-Fiber Venting Base Sheet Used in Roofing
Also Known As:
The ASTM D4897/D4897M-16 standard describes the manufacture and requirements of Type II heavy-duty asphalt-impregnated and coated glass-fiber venting base sheets. These sheets are used as the first ply of a roofing membrane.
The base sheet is composed of a thin porous sheet made of uniformly distributed glass fibers. It may also contain reinforcing strands or glass yarns, which are bonded with a water-resistant resinous binder. The top side of the sheet is covered with a mineral surfacing, while the bottom side has coarse mineral granules. This combination allows for the lateral release of pressure in roofing systems.
The standard specifies various physical and dimensional property requirements that the base sheet must meet. These include longitudinal and transverse breaking strength, spot-mopping hole characteristics, pliability, behavior on heating, ash content, and moisture. The finished product should not crack or be excessively sticky, to prevent tearing and damage upon unrolling.
