Standard Guide for Design and Construction of Ornamental Steel Picket Fence Systems for Security Purposes

SKU141843424 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2009 Pages CountPages4

The ASTM F2814-09 (R2015) standard provides guidelines for the design and construction of ornamental steel picket fence systems with the intention of increasing security.

The standard emphasizes that the selection of appropriate styles and configurations of the fence system can enhance its security. This includes increasing the height of the fence, using curved outward picket styles to form a parapet on the attack side, and decreasing the spacing between vertical pickets.

To further strengthen the security of the fence system, it is recommended to incorporate security accessories such as barbed wire or barbed tape on the top, sides, or bottom of the fence. Additionally, supplemental security fence fill materials like expanded metal, welded wire mesh, or chain-link mini-mesh fabric can be used. Visibility can also be restricted by adding slats or screening panels when necessary.

The standard also suggests the installation of multiple fence lines to create isolation zones, which can enhance patrolling and visual monitoring capabilities. For additional protection against vehicle penetration, anti-ram cable systems can be incorporated into the fence system.
