ASTM E631-15 is a standard terminology that consists of terms and definitions related to buildings and building construction. The purpose of this standard is to provide preferred and accepted designations, along with the meanings and explanations of technical concepts, in a way that can be understood by both non-expert and expert users.

This comprehensive terminology standard contains all ASTM standardized definitions generated by ASTM Committee E06 that are considered general in nature. In addition, there are separate terminology standards developed within Committee E06 by various technical subcommittees, which are specific to certain subject fields. These separate terminologies are grouped for convenient use and some of the terminology data from these subsidiary terminology standards also appear in the comprehensive standard.

The standard lists terms in alphabetical sequence and compound terms are presented in the natural spoken order. To show the relationships in certain families of concepts, groups of narrower terms and their definitions are grouped under the definition of the broader term. Each sub-entry is listed in italics with a cross-reference to the special class.

In some cases, certain standard definitions are adopted from other sources and are copied exactly. The source of each adopted definition is identified at the right margin following the definition.
