Standard ENStandard Test Method for No-Pick-Up Time of Traffic Paint
Also Known As:
The ASTM D711-20 standard specifies a laboratory procedure for determining the no-pick-up time of a traffic paint. This test method is applicable to various types of traffic paints, including waterborne, solventborne, and some 100% solids liquid traffic paints. The purpose of this test is to provide a means of relative testing and potentially qualifying traffic paints for field application in approved specifications, provided that certain conditions, such as wet film thickness, temperature, humidity, and air flow, are controlled within specified tolerances.
To conduct the test, a wheel with rubber O-rings is rolled down a ramp over a freshly applied traffic paint film. The wheel passes over the film repeatedly until there is no transfer of paint to the rubber rings. The elapsed time from the application of the paint film to the point of no paint transfer is considered the no-pick-up time. The test environment can be either a static (no-air-flow) or a regulated air flow condition, depending on the agreement between the buyer and seller.
It should be noted that although this test method provides a means of predicting relative field performance of traffic paints, direct correlation between the test results and field applications is challenging due to numerous variables involved in field application. These variables include film thickness, air temperature, humidity, wind speed, pavement type, film profile over pavement, pavement temperature, porosity, moisture content, and sunlight exposure. However, adherence to the testing protocol can help in obtaining meaningful comparison and relative field performance prediction. The associated figure displays the apparatus used in the test, showing the wheel passing over the traffic paint film.
