Standard EN SampleStandard Test Methods for One-Dimensional Swell or Collapse of Soils
Also Known As:
ASTM D4546-21 is a standard that provides test methods for measuring the one-dimensional swell or collapse behavior of soils. The standard includes three different test methods, referred to as Test Methods A, B, and C. These test methods are used to measure wetting-induced swell or collapse strains, as well as load-induced strains following wetting.
The measured swell or collapse strains can be used to estimate heave or settlement of a confined soil profile, as well as the magnitudes of swell pressure and free swell strain. The selection of the appropriate test method, loading, and inundation sequences is crucial to ensure that the test conditions closely simulate field conditions. Small variations in density, water content, or the sequence of loading and wetting can have a significant impact on the test results.
It is important to note that the quality of the results obtained using this standard relies on the competence of the personnel performing the tests and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740, which provides criteria for evaluating the competence and reliability of testing agencies, does not guarantee reliable results. Therefore, users of this standard are cautioned to consider multiple factors and evaluate the suitability of the testing procedures and equipment used.
