Standard ENStandard Test Method for Estimating Degree of Particle Coating of Asphalt Mixtures
Also Known As:
ASTM D2489/D2489M-16 is a standard test method that provides an estimate of the degree of particle coating in asphalt mixtures. The purpose of this test is to determine the percentage of coated particles after different mixing times, which helps establish the minimum mixing time required to achieve satisfactory coating under specific conditions. The test method can also be used to sample cold mixtures from stockpiles and ensure that satisfactory coating has been retained.
This procedure is applicable to both asphalt mixtures and cold-mixed asphalt paving mixtures as specified in Specification D4215. However, it is important to note that even if a paving mixture meets the specified percentage of coated particles, it does not guarantee uniform distribution of asphalt cement throughout the mixture.
It is important to highlight that this test method should not be used for acceptance or rejection by owner agencies. Instead, it is primarily used as a tool for establishing mixing times and ensuring coating retention in stockpiles.
