Standard ENStandard Test Method for Softening Point of Bitumen (Ring-and-Ball Apparatus)
Also Known As:
The ASTM D36/D36M-14 (R2020) standard provides a method for determining the softening point of bitumen. This test is important because bitumens are viscoelastic materials that do not have well-defined melting points. The softening point is a useful parameter for classifying bitumens and assessing their flow characteristics at elevated temperatures encountered in service.
The test method involves using a ring-and-ball apparatus that is immersed in either distilled water or USP glycerin, depending on the temperature range being tested. The test is carried out in the range of 30 to 157 °C [86 to 315 °F]. The apparatus measures the temperature at which the bitumen sample softens and allows the ball to fall through the ring.
By using a closely defined and reproducible method, the standard ensures consistent results in determining the softening point of bitumen. This helps in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply and provides valuable information about the flow characteristics of bitumen at elevated temperatures.
