ASTM D6153-15 is a standard specification that outlines the requirements for materials used in bridge deck waterproofing membrane systems. The standard covers three types of membrane systems: Type I, Type II, and Type III.
Type I systems are cold liquid-applied chemically curing membrane materials that require a separate membrane protection course. These materials are used to prevent the passage of water from the bituminous surface course to or through the bridge deck.
Type II systems are hot applied elastomeric membrane systems that also require a separate membrane protection course. Similarly, they are used to prevent water penetration.
Type III systems are preformed sheet membrane systems. These systems are also applied to bridge decks to prevent water from passing through or infiltrating the structure.
The standard specifies the sampling methods for each type of membrane system, and establishes requirements for their performance and physical properties, including permeability and pliability. This ensures that the materials used in these membrane systems meet quality and performance standards.
