Standard ENStandard Test Method for Staining of Porous Substrate by Joint Sealants
Also Known As:
ASTM C1248-18 is a standard test method that evaluates the likelihood of a joint sealant causing staining on a porous substrate. Staining is considered aesthetically undesirable, and this test method aims to determine if a sealant has the potential to cause early stains on materials such as marble, limestone, sandstone, and granite. It is important to note that this test method is an accelerated test and does not guarantee that the sealant will not stain or discolor porous substrates over longer periods of time.
The standard covers four types of laboratory tests conducted on compressed samples. These tests include storage under standard laboratory conditions, storage in an oven, exposure in a fluorescent UV/condensation device, and exposure in a xenon arc device. These tests simulate different environmental conditions to assess the staining potential of the sealant on porous substrates.
It is worth mentioning that the committee responsible for this standard is not aware of any comparable standards published by other organizations, indicating the unique and specialized nature of this test method.
