The ASTM E1074-15 (R2020)e1 standard provides guidelines for calculating and interpreting the net benefits (NB) and net savings (NS) methods in evaluating building designs and systems.
The NB (NS) method helps measure the economic performance of an investment by considering all relevant monetary values associated with the investment over a specified study period. This measure can be expressed in either present value or equivalent annual value terms, taking into account the time value of money.
This standard is useful in determining the cost-effectiveness of a project and identifying the most cost-effective size or design for a specific purpose. It can also be used to determine the most cost-effective combination of projects within a limited budget, maximizing the aggregate NB (NS) while staying within budget constraints.
The NB method is recommended when the focus is on the benefits rather than project costs, while the NS method is used when the focus is on project savings or reductions in project costs.
