Standard ENStandard Practice for Selection and Use of Emulsified Asphalts
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3628-15 (R2021) standard provides guidelines for choosing and utilizing emulsified asphalts in different paving and related applications.
According to Section 4.1 of the standard, emulsified asphalts are classified by type (rapid, medium, or slow setting) and grade within type (based on viscosity or the characteristic of the residual asphalt). The selection of a specific type and grade is influenced by factors such as the type of construction, properties of the mineral aggregate (grading and composition), and environmental conditions during construction. For surface treatments and seals, rapid-setting emulsions are formulated to set quickly upon contact with the mineral aggregate or pavement surface. In mix types, slower breaking emulsions are necessary to allow for mixing and laydown. The type and grade of emulsified asphalt also depend on the presence of fine mineral matter in the aggregate, with slow-setting emulsions potentially required for dense-graded aggregates with a large amount of fine material.
In Section 4.2, the standard emphasizes that the recommendations in Table 1, which provides general guidance for emulsion selection, should be used as a starting point. It suggests that if users are unsure about the appropriate emulsion type and grade for their intended use, they should consult with emulsified asphalt suppliers for expert advice. Additionally, the table provides definitions of terms used within it and specific notes regarding certain emulsion grades, such as RS-1 and CRS-1, which may be used as tack coats under specific conditions. It also acknowledges that grades other than MS-2h may be used when experience has demonstrated satisfactory performance and allows for dilution of emulsified asphalt with water in accordance with state regulations.
