Standard ENStandard Test Method for Time of Setting of Concrete Mixtures by Penetration Resistance
Also Known As:
ASTM C403/C403M-16 is a standard test method for determining the time of setting of concrete mixtures by penetration resistance. The setting of concrete is a gradual process, so this method defines the time of setting based on the times required for the mortar to reach specified values of resistance to penetration.
This test method is useful for determining the effects of variables such as water content, cementitious material, and admixtures on the time of setting of concrete. It can also be used to assess compliance with specified time-of-setting requirements.
In addition, this test method can be applied to prepared mortars and grouts. However, when determining the setting time of concrete, the test should be performed on mortar sieved from the concrete mixture rather than on a prepared mortar simulating the mortar fraction of the concrete. It has been found that using prepared mortar can result in increased initial and final setting times.
