Standard Test Method for Determining Demulsibility of Emulsified Asphalt

SKU162197675 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2017 Pages CountPages3

ASTM D6936-17 is a standard test method used to determine the demulsibility of emulsified asphalt. The purpose of this test is to identify or classify an emulsified asphalt as either RS (Rapid Set) or MS (Medium Set) by measuring the amount of available asphalt that separates from the emulsion. The separation is achieved by using specified amounts and concentrations of calcium chloride solution for anionic emulsified asphalts and dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate for cationic emulsified asphalts.

It is important to note that the quality of the results obtained from this test method relies on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the proper calibration and maintenance of the equipment used. While compliance with Specification D3666 is recommended, it alone does not guarantee reliable results. The reliability of the outcomes depends on various factors, and following the guidelines of Specification D3666 or a similar acceptable guideline helps in evaluating and controlling some of those factors.

The standard encompasses both anionic and cationic emulsified asphalts of the RS and MS types. It measures the chemical breaking of the emulsion. The document contains references to notes and footnotes that provide additional explanatory material. However, these notes and footnotes, with the exception of those in tables and figures, are not considered requirements of the standard.
